Police Recover Suspected Narcotics Worth KSh5.1 Million in Bungoma and Busia

In a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, Kenyan police recovered 170.8 kilogrammes of suspected narcotics valued at approximately KSh5.1 million during separate intelligence-led operations in Bungoma and Busia counties on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

Bungoma Operation

Acting on credible intelligence, officers from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) in Bungoma, working with DCI Webuye West, targeted a white Mazda CX-5 (registration KDY 338F) along the Malaba–Webuye highway.

When the vehicle appeared, the driver noticed the officers and sped off, sparking a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended tragically when the Mazda collided with a red TVS motorcycle (registration KMFV 109F). The motorcyclist, identified as Muzungu Munialo, sustained fatal injuries. The Mazda’s occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

A subsequent search of the abandoned car uncovered 162 bales of cannabis wrapped in yellow cellotape, plus additional suspected narcotics in a polythene bag. The total haul weighed 170.8 kg and carried an estimated street value of KSh5,124,000. Detectives also recovered a second number plate (KF2 8588) from the back seat, believed intended to conceal the vehicle’s identity.

Busia Operation

In a separate incident in Busia County, officers on patrol along the Bundokomi–Mundika road spotted a motorcycle carrying two green sacks. When officers attempted to stop the rider, he abandoned the motorcycle and escaped.

A search of the sacks revealed two bales wrapped in yellow cellotape containing green dry material suspected to be narcotics.

Ongoing Investigations

The vehicle, motorcycle, and recovered substances are now in the custody of NANIB in Bungoma and Busia. A manhunt for the fleeing suspects is intensifying as investigators work to unravel the wider trafficking network.

The National Police Service and DCI have expressed condolences to the family of the late Muzungu Munialo and reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling narcotics networks across the country.

This latest seizure forms part of the ongoing nationwide crackdown on illicit drugs, particularly along key border routes linking Kenya and Uganda.
