Rights Group Plans Monday March to State House Over Soaring Fuel Prices

The Coalition of Human Rights Defenders has formally notified Kenyan police of its intention to stage a peaceful demonstration against high fuel prices in Nairobi on Monday, October 26.

In a letter dated Thursday, October 22, and received the same day at the Police Service Headquarters, the coalition outlined plans for the protest to begin along Kimathi Street in the city’s Central Business District before proceeding to State House.

The group described the planned action as peaceful and focused on the rising cost of fuel, which has continued to strain households and businesses across the country. Organizers said the route would take demonstrators from the heart of the CBD to the seat of the presidency to highlight public concerns over petroleum prices.

Police have been put on notice of the gathering, a standard step required under Kenyan law for public assemblies. Authorities have not yet publicly responded to the notification.

Fuel prices remain a persistent source of public frustration, with successive adjustments pushing the cost of petrol, diesel and kerosene higher in recent months. The coalition’s planned march is the latest expression of that discontent, coming just days after formal notice was delivered to police.
