Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President McDonald Mariga and six other National Executive Committee (NEC) members were expelled on Saturday, 7 November 2026, during a Special General Meeting (SGM) of the FKF General Assembly held in Meru.
The General Assembly, FKF’s supreme decision-making body, voted overwhelmingly in favour of the expulsions after considering allegations of serious and repeated violations of the FKF Constitution and applicable FIFA regulations.
Those expelled are:
- McDonald Mariga (FKF Vice President) – 65 Yes, 1 No
- Robert Macharia (Central Kenya) – 65 Yes, 1 No
- Gabriel Mugendi (Coast) – 65 Yes, 1 No
- Collins Opiyo Kalee (also referred to as Caleb Collins, Nyanza) – 64 Yes, 2 No
- Bernard Lagat (Rift Valley / Lower or Upper Rift) – 64 Yes, 2 No
- Violet Kerubo Momanyi (Women’s Representative) – 64 Yes, 1 No
- Daniel “Dan” Shikanda (Nairobi) – 65 Yes, 1 No
AFC Leopards chairman Boniface Ambani was among the few who voted against the removals, arguing there was still room for dialogue to resolve the long-running differences within the federation.
According to an FKF statement, the Assembly considered a purported NEC resolution of 24 April 2026 that sought the removal of FKF President Hussein Mohammed and other officials, as well as the seven members’ repeated failure to attend duly convened NEC meetings, unauthorised communications issued on behalf of the federation, and other actions deemed contrary to the FKF Constitution and football regulations. The General Assembly acted under Articles 16 and 24 of the FKF Constitution.
Representatives of FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) attended the meeting as observers, along with government officials including the Acting Sports Registrar. The SGM itself was marked by earlier tension and security incidents at the venue (Three Steers Hotel), including the use of tear gas by police before proceedings continued.
The expelled officials remain subject to any further sanctions that may be imposed by the judicial bodies of FKF, CAF or FIFA. The decision marks a major consolidation of control by the Hussein Mohammed-led leadership amid months of internal conflict that had previously disrupted NEC quorum and decision-making.
FKF is expected to fill the vacant positions in due course in line with its constitution.
