NYERI- Once a little-known village in Nyeri County, Wamunyoro has rapidly emerged as a central hub for opposition consultations as leaders seek to forge a united front against President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The rural home of former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has become a frequent venue for high-level political meetings. In recent weeks, it has hosted key opposition figures, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and leaders of the Linda Mwananchi movement, followed by Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka and a delegation of governors and MPs.
Discussions at Wamunyoro have focused on opposition unity, the possibility of fielding a single presidential candidate, and strategies to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration. After the Kalonzo meeting on 26 October, both DCP and Wiper signaled commitment to rallying behind one flagbearer under a shared platform.
Wamunyoro is increasingly being compared to established political landmarks such as Sugoi (associated with Ruto), Ichaweri (the Kenyatta family), Kabarak (Moi), and Othaya (Kibaki). Its rise to national prominence coincides with Gachagua’s efforts to rebuild influence after his removal from office and the formation of DCP.
Gachagua has positioned the residence as a place where political engagement happens on his terms, hosting successive delegations from Mt Kenya and beyond. While some opposition figures have called for neutral venues, the steady flow of visitors underscores Wamunyoro’s growing role in shaping the opposition’s 2027 strategy.
As consultations continue, the quiet Nyeri village is now at the centre of efforts to determine whether the opposition can overcome internal differences and present a cohesive challenge to the incumbent.
