Siaya Governor Orengo Launches LDP as 2027 Vehicle, Rallies Coast Against Ruto

Siaya Governor James Orengo has formally positioned the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) as his political vehicle for the 2027 General Election, addressing party delegates in Golini, Kwale County, and calling for a united opposition front to challenge President William Ruto. Citizen

Speaking on October 24, 2026, at an event hosted by veteran Coast politician and former Cabinet minister Ambassador Chirau Ali Mwakwere, Orengo declared that opposition parties—including Wiper (led by Kalonzo Musyoka), Ukombozi, and Jubilee factions linked to Fred Matiang’i—must come together. “Sisi sote tuko pamoja na vile vyama vingine vya Kalonzo, Wiper, na Ukombozi, ya Jubilee ya Matiang’i. Yote lazima tujumuike tukae pamoja, la sivyo huyo Ruto, kama kuna mtu anajua kuiba kura,” he said (We are all together with other parties… otherwise Ruto, if there is someone who knows how to steal votes). Citizen

Orengo also took a hard line on electoral integrity. He rejected proposed changes to election results transmission rules that could affect the mandatory livestreaming of results, warning that any move to undermine transparency would be challenged in court. “Ata waweke sheria ya aina gani, sisi tutaenda kortini kuitupilia mbali… mimi nitakuwa kwa mstari wa mbele kama Senior Counsel,” he stated (Whatever law they bring, we will go to court to throw it out… I will be at the front line as senior counsel. Citizen In a follow-up statement on X, he described the proposed Election Results Transmission Bill as a “regressive, impunity-driven” attempt to subvert the people’s will and vowed to fight it both politically and legally if assented to. X

The LDP has deep historical roots. It was a key player in the 2002 National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) that ended KANU’s long rule, and it was closely associated with the late Raila Odinga at the time. Citizen Orengo’s move comes amid ongoing opposition realignments. It follows reports of his absence from a September Linda Mwananchi retreat that endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the movement’s presidential candidate, as well as earlier public statements from Orengo affirming commitment to opposition unity and a single candidate while still preparing his own platform. Earlier claims of a full takeover of the existing LDP were disputed by Prof. Fred Ogola, who identified himself as the party’s political leader, but Orengo has proceeded to use the LDP branding and structure in public engagements. Tuko

Mwakwere reinforced the call for structured opposition coordination, noting that each formation should build its strength before leaders jointly decide on a common flagbearer. Orengo’s Coast outing also highlighted local grievances, including land injustices, economic marginalization, and youth unemployment, while stressing devolution and the need for coastal resources to benefit host communities. X

The development adds another layer to Kenya’s fluid pre-2027 opposition landscape, where multiple leaders are consolidating vehicles while publicly committing to eventual unity against the Kenya Kwanza administration. Orengo, a long-time opposition figure, lawyer, and former senator, has previously contested the presidency and continues to frame his current efforts around defending the Constitution and preventing electoral malpractice.
