Sifuna Meets Wetang’ula and Mudavadi at Burudi Nabwera’s Requiem Mass

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, met National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi at the requiem mass for veteran diplomat and former Cabinet Minister Burudi Nabwera.

The service took place at Friends Church in Lang’ata, Nairobi. Sifuna shared photographs of the gathering on social media, writing, “Happening…Requiem mass for the late Mzee Burudi Nabwera, diplomat, former MP and member of Cabinet, at Friends Church Langata.” The three leaders joined other mourners to honour Nabwera, whose career included service in diplomacy, Parliament, and the Cabinet.

The encounter occurred against a backdrop of public political exchanges over Sifuna’s bid to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. Both Mudavadi and Wetang’ula have recently questioned whether newer opposition formations and their leaders possess the experience, structures, and time required for a credible presidential campaign. Sifuna, who was removed as Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General, has continued promoting the Linda Mwananchi movement and the Equitable Party as a vehicle capable of building national support.

Earlier in the week, Wetang’ula, speaking at a boda boda empowerment event in Bungoma, argued that the presidency is a serious responsibility that should not be gambled with and that no current opposition leader has the experience and capacity to defeat Ruto. Mudavadi had similarly cautioned against new political parties formed close to an election, questioning their ability to develop policies and organisational frameworks in the remaining time. Sifuna has countered that established leaders underestimate ordinary citizens’ capacity to back a new movement.

The meeting at Nabwera’s requiem mass brings the leaders into the same space at a moment of heightened competition, particularly in Western Kenya, where Sifuna has been mobilising support while Mudavadi and Wetang’ula continue to rally behind Ruto’s re-election and outline longer-term regional political strategies.
