MAVOKO, Machakos County — Homeowners in Mavoko are counting heavy losses after more than 100 alleged goons demolished houses, schools, and churches on the disputed East African Portland Cement (EAPCC) land, amid a long-running ownership battle involving Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).
The demolitions, now in their fourth day as of Friday, October 30, 2026, have left families homeless and businesses destroyed. Security has been heightened to supervise the exercise and protect residents from looters, according to reports from the Kenya News Agency.Kenyanews
Residents say the attackers are strangers, possibly from Syokimau, Mlolongo, and Nairobi. They target belongings during the day while demolitions are underway and at night when families have fled for temporary shelter elsewhere.Kenyanews
Among those affected is Caleb Kiminza, whose residential and rental houses plus his business were razed. He said he used all his savings to build them and has moved his family to a friend’s house. “We are spending much more during these shifts than when we were during construction,” he noted, as people scramble to salvage what they can from the ruins.Kenyanews
Bishop Shadrack Musau of Mountain View Baptist Church also watched his church and school come down. He said he bought the land in 2016; the church served a congregation of over 300 and the school had about 150 children. He has appealed to the Red Cross and other humanitarian groups for bedding, food, and temporary shelter, noting that many affected people are waiting for month-end salaries.Kenyanews
The demolitions follow a court victory for East African Portland Cement, which secured the right to evict occupants from more than 4,274 acres after the respondents failed to produce ownership documents. The land has been at the centre of a protracted dispute linked to KCB, which took control of large parcels as part of a debt settlement with the cement company. A regularization process for some occupants has been ongoing, but earlier court applications by residents’ groups to stop evictions and demolitions were dismissed, including by the Court of Appeal in 2025.Kenyanews
Standard Media has also reported the scene, with video footage by Peterson Githaiga capturing homeowners assessing the destruction amid the KCB-Portland land row.X
The situation remains tense, with increased security presence as authorities continue the clearances and residents seek urgent assistance while the legal and ownership questions linger.
