Heavy Rains Trigger Flooding in Tana River and Lamu, Displacing Over 300 Households

TANA RIVER COUNTY — Heavy rains along Kenya’s coast have caused flooding in Tana River County after the Tulu and Minjila dams in Tana Delta overflowed, sending water into nearby villages and homes.

The Kenya Red Cross Society reports that 302 households have been displaced, while a further 3,156 households have been affected by the flooding. In neighbouring Lamu County, some homes in Hindi and Witu have also begun to experience flooding as the rains continue.

Of the 302 displaced households in Tana River, 175 have so far received emergency assistance, including food, tarpaulins and blankets, from the county and national governments. The remaining families are expected to be reached in the coming days as relief operations continue.

Kenya Red Cross teams remain on the ground alongside partners, assessing needs and supporting affected families while the rains persist. The flooding comes amid broader concerns over rising water levels in the region, with authorities previously urging residents in low-lying and riverine areas to remain vigilant.

Relief efforts are ongoing as humanitarian teams work to reach more households and monitor the situation as rainfall continues along the coast.
