KenGen Names Internal Veteran Ronoh Kibet Charles as Next Managing Director and CEO

Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has appointed Eng. Ronoh Kibet Charles as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective February 1, 2027. He will succeed Eng. Peter Waweru Njenga, who is retiring after leading the company through a period of strong financial performance and continued growth in geothermal capacity.

Kibet currently serves as General Manager for Commercial Services. He brings 17 years of experience in geothermal development and project delivery, including significant involvement in the Olkaria Green Energy Park. The company highlighted his advanced academic qualifications and professional certifications from leading institutions as part of the rationale for the internal promotion.

The decision to elevate an executive from within is widely seen as a move to preserve operational continuity at East Africa’s largest renewable energy producer. Under Njenga’s leadership, KenGen reported a profit of KSh 10.48 billion in 2025 while advancing several geothermal projects that form the backbone of its generation portfolio.

KenGen remains the dominant player in Kenya’s electricity supply, with geothermal energy accounting for the majority of its output and positioning the company as a regional leader in clean power. The transition comes as the utility continues to expand its geothermal footprint, an area in which Kibet has spent much of his career.

By choosing an internal candidate with deep experience in both commercial operations and geothermal project execution, KenGen’s board has signaled confidence that the company can maintain its recent trajectory of profitability and capacity growth without disruption. Kibet is expected to take the helm on February 1, 2027, as Njenga concludes his tenure.
