Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has declared that a first-time senator will make history by ascending to the presidency in the 2027 general election.
The outspoken lawmaker, who was elected to the Senate for the first time in 2022, is positioning himself as a leading opposition contender against President William Ruto. Sifuna currently leads The Equitable Party (set for rebranding linked to the Linda Mwananchi movement) as its presidential flag-bearer.
Sifuna, a former ODM secretary-general, has stepped up his national campaign through Linda Mwananchi rallies, criticising the government and vowing to prioritise constitutionalism, accountability and people-centred policies. He has repeatedly stated his intention to challenge Ruto and make him a one-term president.
At around 45 years old by election time in August 2027, Sifuna would be among the younger candidates in the race if he secures the opposition ticket or runs independently through his new vehicle. His rise from first-term senator to presidential hopeful has drawn both support, particularly among younger voters, and criticism from Ruto allies who have labelled him a “dynasty candidate.”
Opposition figures remain divided on unity ahead of 2027, with other contenders including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka also in the mix. Sifuna has indicated his priority is building grassroots structures before deeper coalition talks.
The senator’s bold prediction underscores the intensifying early campaign for Kenya’s next presidential contest.
