Machakos, November 1, 2026—Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has reaffirmed his determination to become Kenya’s next president, while publicly challenging his political allies to demonstrate stronger and more visible support for his candidacy ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Saturday during a house-opening ceremony for Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu, Kalonzo told supporters in Ukambani that “the time is now.” He urged leaders and supporters aligned with him to openly campaign for his bid, warning that lukewarm backing could weaken the opposition’s chances of mounting a serious challenge against President William Ruto.
Kalonzo contrasted the turnout at the event with that of other opposition figures. He noted that DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua arrived with a large, well-branded entourage, while his own Wiper delegation was smaller. He also observed that DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa had appeared to endorse Sifuna’s ambitions, prompting the hostile reaction from parts of the crowd.
The remarks came a day after Kalonzo was heckled at the launch of the Linda Mwananchi Movement headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi. Supporters of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna chanted “President Sifuna” after Kalonzo cautioned against premature endorsements and insisted that the opposition’s joint presidential candidate should be chosen through formal processes, including a planned National Delegates Convention.
The episode has highlighted ongoing tensions within the opposition as several leaders position themselves for the 2027 presidential ticket. Kalonzo has maintained that he remains the most experienced candidate to lead the opposition and has called for greater unity and mobilization from those who support his candidacy. He has also previously stated that he would back whichever candidate emerges as the opposition’s flagbearer, provided the process is followed.
Opposition leaders are yet to agree on a single presidential candidate. Consultations are expected to intensify in the coming weeks as the camps of Kalonzo, Sifuna, Gachagua, and others continue to maneuver ahead of the election.
