NAIROBI — Rescue teams recovered the body of a woman from the debris of a collapsed multi-storey building in Eastleigh on Friday, eight days after the structure fell along 9th Street.
The remains were retrieved early on 30 October as the search entered its eighth day. Teams had gained access to the lower levels of the rubble, including the basement area where several of the missing were believed to be trapped. The body, which sustained severe injuries, has been transferred to Nairobi City Mortuary for DNA analysis and formal identification.
The building, still under construction at the time, collapsed on 23 October, trapping workers, traders and others beneath concrete and debris. Several survivors were rescued in the initial days of the operation. Officials estimate that between 80 and 85 per cent of the debris has now been cleared.
Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba confirmed that 16 people remain unaccounted for following a verification process conducted jointly by the Kenya Red Cross and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. Mobile phone data indicated that nine of those individuals were at the site shortly before the collapse.
The National Disaster Management Unit continues to coordinate the multi-agency response, supported by the Kenya Red Cross and other emergency services, as the search for the missing continues.
