Newborn Baby Found Alive in Moving Woven Bag, Rushed to Soweto Hospital in Nairobi

Nairobi, November 2, 2026

A newborn baby boy has been rescued after a young boy discovered him inside a moving woven bag and raised the alarm. The infant was found with his umbilical cord and placenta still attached, rushed to Soweto Hospital, and is reported to be in good health.

According to an account shared by Njeri Wa Migwi, Executive Director of the gender-based violence organisation Usikimye, the small boy noticed the bag moving, opened it, and found the newborn inside. He sought help from a passerby man, who wrapped the baby in his jacket and brought him to the Usikimye office.

Staff at the office provided diapers, purchased shawls, and immediately took the baby to Soweto Hospital. Medical staff immunized him; he weighed 3.2 kilograms and was confirmed to be in good condition. The group is currently at the children’s office awaiting the next steps in the formal process for the abandoned infant.

Cases of abandoned newborns continue to be reported in various parts of Nairobi and other Kenyan towns, often linked to economic hardship, limited access to support services, or other personal circumstances. Child protection authorities and organisations such as Usikimye typically coordinate medical care, temporary placement, and efforts to locate parents or arrange alternative care when infants are found in such circumstances.
