NAIROBI — Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has publicly declared her interest in becoming President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 General Election, arguing that she is qualified for the role and that the Deputy President position should remain open to competition.Peopledaily
Speaking in recent interviews, including on Citizen TV’s Sunday Live, and at a G7 women’s leadership forum, Waiguru said she has expressed her desire to serve as Deputy President. She praised Ruto’s work ethic, stating: “I have never seen a president work as hard as William Ruto” and describing him as the most dedicated leader she has worked under, having previously served under Presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta.The-star
Waiguru emphasised her extensive experience, citing roles at the World Bank, Citibank, the National Treasury, the Office of the President, and as Governor of Kirinyaga, as well as being the first woman to chair the Council of Governors. “I have worked in more institutions and held more leadership positions than both Kindiki and Gachagua. So I believe I am qualified,” she said, referring to current Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.Thekenyatimes
She argued that women should not face double standards when seeking the position. “When a woman says I want a deputy president, it becomes a ‘why’ question… The question is why not? … They can mobilise, I can mobilise. They speak, I can speak. They have money, I have it as well,” Waiguru stated. She added that she intends to push for a seat at the negotiating table for the 2027 ticket and has declared that “Anne Mumbi Waiguru will be on the ballot for President of the Republic of Kenya in 2032.”Tuko
Her bid comes amid competition for the running-mate slot. Kindiki has previously insisted he will remain on the ticket with Ruto. Other names in the mix include Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and figures linked to ODM, with some ODM leaders pushing for the Deputy President position under any pre-election arrangement. Waiguru’s move also highlights broader debates about gender representation and Mt Kenya regional interests ahead of the polls.The-star
Waiguru has ruled out a Senate bid in Kirinyaga after completing her second term as governor, saying she prefers to focus on national leadership opportunities. Her declarations have intensified discussions within Kenya Kwanza about the composition of the 2027 ticket as Ruto prepares for a re-election campaign.
