Kerugoya, November 3, 2026
Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru on Tuesday delivered her final State of the County Address to the County Assembly, outlining what she described as measurable progress across the economy, healthcare, water, agriculture, infrastructure and revenue mobilisation over her two terms in office.
Waiguru said the county’s Gross County Product (GCP) had risen from KSh 114.9 billion in 2017 to KSh 190.79 billion in 2025, representing growth of about 66 per cent. She reported real economic growth of 8.7 per cent in 2025, which she said outpaced the national rate of approximately 6 per cent. Kbc
On healthcare, the governor stated that Kerugoya Referral Hospital had been expanded from 220 to 450 beds through the operationalisation of the medical complex. She added that the county’s health network had grown to 72 facilities. The-star
Household access to clean water increased from 48 per cent to 74 per cent, reaching an additional 53,000 households, according to the address. Waiguru linked the gains to a series of bulk water projects, borehole drilling and distribution network expansions implemented since 2017. The-star
In agriculture, which supports a large share of the county’s population, rice production rose to 210,000 metric tonnes annually, generating over KSh 16 billion for farmers. Coffee production reached 49,100 metric tonnes, with sales of KSh 7.48 billion recorded in the 2025/26 financial year. Earlier reports had noted rice output more than tripling from levels around 65,000 metric tonnes in 2017. The-star
On infrastructure, Waiguru reported that the county had graded 7,616.5 km of roads and gravelled 2,730.5 km under programmes such as Nyorosha Barabara Mashinani. Own-source revenue grew from KSh 344.4 million in the 2017/18 financial year to KSh 1.11 billion in 2025/26, which she attributed to digitisation of collections and the Facility Improvement Fund. Kbc
Poverty levels were reported at 21 per cent, with an estimated 52,000 households lifted out of poverty. The figure has been cited consistently in previous county statements linked to agricultural support under the Wezesha Kirinyaga programme and other interventions. Kenyanews
Waiguru, who is serving her second and final term, described the address as a reflection on nine years of service and expressed gratitude to residents. She said remaining months would focus on completing ongoing projects and consolidating gains. The figures presented are those stated by the governor and county administration during the address; independent national statistical updates for the full 2025 period were not immediately available at the time of reporting.
