Flooding Hits Githurai Roundabout After Heavy Saturday Morning Rains

Nairobi, October 31, 2026 — Heavy overnight rains that continued into Saturday morning have left Githurai Roundabout flooded, disrupting traffic and forcing motorists to navigate waterlogged roads under the flyover.

Images and videos shared on social media show murky floodwaters covering sections of the busy roundabout, with vans, cars, and other vehicles wading through the water. Pedestrians carrying umbrellas moved along the edges, while debris and litter floated near the pillars supporting the overpass. The downpour, which reportedly began late Friday night, turned the normally busy junction into a temporary river, slowing movement for commuters heading into and out of the city. X

Githurai Roundabout, a key link between Nairobi and Kiambu County along the Thika Road corridor, is a well-known flood-prone spot during heavy rains due to drainage challenges. Local accounts described significant water accumulation that made parts of the roadway difficult to pass, though no immediate reports of injuries or major vehicle damage had emerged by mid-morning.

The flooding comes amid the ongoing rainy season across Kenya, with the Kenya Meteorological Department earlier warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of Nairobi, Kiambu, and other counties. Similar waterlogging was reported elsewhere in the capital on Saturday morning, including sections of roads in Parklands, where residents questioned the city’s preparedness for heavier rains linked to the broader seasonal patterns.

Nairobi and neighbouring Kiambu counties have previously undertaken drainage clearing and stormwater works in flood-prone areas such as Githurai and Mwiki following earlier incidents. Officials have repeatedly urged residents and motorists to avoid driving through flooded roads, stay clear of drainage channels, and monitor weather updates as the rains continue.

As of Saturday morning, traffic in the Githurai area remained disrupted, with motorists advised to exercise caution and use alternative routes where possible while the waters subside. No official statement from Nairobi City County or the Kenya National Highways Authority specifically addressing the Githurai incident had been issued at the time of reporting.
