University of Nairobi Calls on Alumni to Drive Hostel Upgrades and Student Mentorship

Nairobi, October 30, 2026 – The University of Nairobi has urged its alumni to take a more active role in improving student accommodation, upgrading facilities, and mentoring current students. X

The appeal was made during the final alumni breakfast meeting under the Adopt-a-Hostel Campaign, held on Friday, 30 October 2026. The session brought together graduates from the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences and Law. X

Distinguished alumni in attendance included renowned lawyer and scholar Prof. PLO Lumumba, former Member of Parliament Hon. Gitobu Imanyara, and Dr. Barrack Muluka.

Participants discussed practical ways to support the university. These included adopting entire hostels, refurbishing individual rooms, improving shared facilities, providing furniture and equipment, funding scholarships, offering internships, and mentoring students. X

The three-month breakfast series has engaged alumni across all 10 faculties, opening conversations on how graduates can contribute to the university’s development. X

The campaign addresses longstanding pressures on student housing. University leaders have previously noted that the institution’s student population exceeds 55,000, while on-campus hostels can accommodate a maximum of about 10,000 students. Many existing facilities also require significant rehabilitation. The Adopt-a-Hostel model, introduced in earlier faculty and management meetings, invites alumni, corporate partners, and well-wishers to sponsor renovations or support new facilities.

With an alumni network of more than 286,000, the University of Nairobi is seeking to mobilise its graduates as a key resource for institutional transformation, particularly in student welfare and learning infrastructure.
